The first of three European finals to conclude the football season will take place this Wednesday in Dublin, Ireland. Atalanta (Italy) and Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) will fight for victory in the Europa League, kick-off at 20:00. A game that, from the very beginning, was marked by the enormous task facing the Bergamo team: to try to do this season what no other team has managed to do: beat the “pharmacists”.
Crowned with an unprecedented victory in the German championship, having already won the German Cup, Bayer Leverkusen are aiming for a treble without defeat. “We played 51 games. Now the task is to win the next two,” said Xabi Alonso, the German team’s coach, about the match this Wednesday and next Saturday in Kaiserslautern, at the bottom of the Bundesliga.
Atalanta coach Gianpiero Gasperini recognizes the strength of his opponents. But be warned. “They are a strong team, they will give us problems, but so will we. Throughout the season we faced other very strong teams both in Italy and in Europe.” One of them was Sporting.
Atalanta is playing in its first European final. Bayer Leverkusen won the UEFA Cup (formerly the Europa League) in 1988 against Espanyol Barcelona.
