Portugal is one of the countries with UEFA’s expanded pilot program to allow permanent attendance at European Cup matches, which is already provided for under Portuguese law, continental football’s regulator said on Wednesday.
UEFA has extended the standing surveillance program into the 2024/25 season and expanded its scope to Portugal, Austria, Belgium, Scotland and the Netherlands, following testing in Germany, France and England in the 2022/23 season. Later Spain was included in it. and Italy.
The European body’s executive committee, meeting this Wednesday in Dublin, intends to obtain a “larger sample with a greater variety of data” to assess under what conditions the use of standing room could be safely reintroduced in their competitions.
UEFA has noticed a growing trend towards the use of standing seating in some national competitions and has taken into account the interest shown by clubs and fans in reintroducing the practice in European competitions by extending the study to countries whose legislation already allows it.
This is the case in Portugal, where the legal regime to combat violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sporting events provides for the designation of “help zones with individual and numbered standing places, in areas with special conditions of access and permanent residence for fans equipped with safety mechanisms of officially approved models that prevent the effect of dragging spectators and at the same time do not increase the capacity of the site.”
