Former World Cup-winning Brazil internationals Ronaldinho, Bebeto and Cafu are among the famous Canaries who will take part in a solidarity game on Sunday to raise funds to support flood victims in the south of the country.
“We had the opportunity to lift the world champion trophy, but now we are going to lift the solidarity cup,” said world champion Cafu, 53, who won the title in 1994 and 2002.
Promoted by TV Globo and broadcast live across the country, the competition, which will bring together artists from different regions and other world champions, will take place at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro and aims to raise proceeds to help tens of thousands of people affected from floods in Rio Grande do Sul.
Brazilian international Tamires or music stars such as Beto and Wesley Safadao will also brighten up the match, which will be coached by current Brazil coach Dorival Junior and one of his predecessors, Mano Menezes, born in Rio Grande do Sul.
“I want to invite all the Brazilian people to take part in this chain of solidarity with our brothers from Rio Grande do Sul. We need everyone’s support,” said Dorival Junior.
According to the latest official report, the funds raised will be donated to associations helping those affected by the floods, which left 161 people dead and 82 missing.
More than 580,000 people were forced to flee their homes as floods consumed entire cities.
