A new quake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale rocked Turkey on Tuesday, and more than 285 aftershocks have already been registered after the country and Syria were hit by two strong shocks this Monday.
The death toll already exceeds five thousand people: 3419 deaths were registered in Turkey, 1602 people in Syria.
The first earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale occurred at dawn and had its epicenter on the outskirts of the Turkish city of Gaziantep, at a depth of 17.9 km. A few hours after the first earthquake, a second earthquake of magnitude 7.7 hit the same region, this time with an epicenter in the Elbistan region, in the neighboring province of Kahramanmaras, causing hundreds of buildings damaged by the first earthquake to collapse.
Thousands of people have been injured, and rescuers are working around the clock looking for survivors under the rubble. It was the strongest earthquake recorded in Turkey in almost a century.
Portugal has provided rescue assistance under the European Civil Protection Mechanism and will send a team of 50 people to assist in the operations, which includes GNR, INEM and firefighters from Zapadores de Lisbon.
