The Judicial Police (PJ) arrested on Saturday in Portimão, Faro district, two men suspected of forging medical prescriptions to purchase a medicine used to produce a drug known as the “purple drink”, police said this Monday.
In a statement, the SP said that the men, aged 22 and 23, were arrested for a “blatant crime” when they tried to illegally purchase a drug whose active ingredient is codeine from pharmacies in the cities of Portimão and Quarteira. .
According to police, the suspects acted “with the knowledge that they were using counterfeit prescriptions” to purchase the drug, which can only be sold with a doctor’s prescription.
According to police, the drug, which belongs to the group of opioids, has an analgesic effect and is addictive when used regularly.
The drug “serves to produce an extremely toxic drink known as ‘purple drink,’ a recreational drug whose value in illicit markets makes its production and sale attractive,” the memo said.
The two detainees, who are “seriously suspected of committing a crime involving forgery of documents,” will appear in court for their first judicial interrogation, the PJ note said.
