A 57-year-old man of Irish nationality died this Monday afternoon as a result of a suspected cardiopulmonary arrest after swimming in Algar Benagil, in the municipality of Lagoa, the National Maritime Authority reported.
Algar de Benagil, near the town of Carvoeiro, is accessible only by sea and Portimão’s marine police responded to the site after receiving an alert this afternoon that a person was on the beach feeling unwell.
According to maritime authorities, the alert came in at 2:58 p.m., “informing that a person felt unwell upon arrival at Algar de Benagil beach.”
In addition to these security forces, the Medical Ambulance and Resuscitation (VMER) and INEM, as well as members of the Lagoa Volunteer Fire Department were also dispatched to the Benagil sandy beach.
“Upon arrival at Benagil beach, it was discovered that the victim had been transported from the interior of Algar de Benagil by a sea tourist vessel to the sandy beach, where he was assisted by INEM staff who carried out resuscitation maneuvers and the situation was reversed,” explains in a message from the maritime department.
Death was confirmed at the scene by an INEM doctor, after which the victim was taken to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Medicine in Portimão.
The maritime department adds that the victim’s family members are being supported by the NCIS psychological service.
