English cyclist Owen Lightfoot (Vigo/Rias Baixas) won on Thursday the first stage of the 31st Volta a Portugal do Futuro/Grande Prémio CMTV, which linked Leiria with Águeda. The 140.5 kilometer race was marked by a breakthrough that occurred at the 15th kilometer and was led by the Englishman Owen Lightfoot, the Chilean Cristobal Mena (Maglia Tecnosylva Bembibre) and the Portuguese Miguel Feliz (Santa Maria da Fair/Segment of Season). Lightfoot, 20, was the strongest on the goal line, winning the stage and receiving the first yellow jersey of the race. The peloton was 1.21 feet late and was dominated by another sprint in which Portuguese João Martins (Rádio Popular-Paredes-Boavista) took the lead. This Friday the second stage of the race will take place, the shortest but also the most difficult. It starts at 12:00 in Murtos and ends around 15:30 at the top of São Macario in the municipality of São Pedro do Sul. It consists of three mountain districts: one of the fourth category, the other of the third category, etc. one of the first category, matching the target.
