Footballers Laurina Oliveros, Julieta Cruz and Lorena Benitez walked out of Argentina’s training camp on Monday, facing harsh accusations of lack of conditions from the Federation (AFA), as well as the men’s world champion.
Three players left the training camp, which took place ahead of friendly games with Costa Rica (on Friday and June 3), and justified their decision with statements on social networks.
“We have reached the point where we are tired of injustice, of not being valued, of not being heard, and, worse, of being humiliated. We need to improve in the women’s team, I’m not talking about finances. I talk about training, we have lunch, we have breakfast,” explained Julieta Cruz.
Lorena Benitez also complained about the conditions and explained that between training sessions they were only given a ham and cheese sandwich and a banana, which is completely inappropriate for highly skilled athletes.
As an excuse from the federation, they were told that there was “no money” and were also informed that they would not be entitled to any payments due to the games being held in Buenos Aires.
The player added that the AFA had asked families about the cost of tickets to watch the games.
The three players’ decision was soon supported by Estefania Banini, the Atlético Madrid player considered the best Argentine player of all time who retired from the national team last year.
“It’s a matter of time. Thank you for having the courage to talk about it,” Banini said.
