Los Angeles Lakers basketball player LeBron James became the all-time leading scorer in North American League (NBA) history this Wednesday with 38,387 points, the previous record held by legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
A four-time champion at the age of 38, LeBron accomplished the feat by scoring the required 36 points in a game between Los Angeles and Oklahoma City to reach 38,388 points in the regular season, not counting the playoffs.
Abdul-Jabbar – one of many celebrities and sports stars who attended the arena where the game was held – became the league’s all-time leading scorer on April 5, 1984, and retired from basketball in 1989 with 38,387 points.
Few have come close to the record. Karl Malone was 1459 points behind Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant was 4744 points behind and Michael Jordan was 6095 points behind.
LeBron James is in his 20th season in the NBA, the same number as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the North American League.
