This Thursday, the captain of Funchal issued a warning of poor visibility on the Madeira seafront, which is valid until 6 am on Friday.
The warning is based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) regarding the general weather situation (wind and sea).
In the document, regional maritime authorities note that visibility will be “good to moderate, becoming temporarily moderate to weak and sometimes poor in the afternoon.”
As for winds, he notes that they will blow from the southern quadrant, “good to moderate, temporarily increasing to moderate and fresh in the afternoon before becoming light and calming in the western quadrant by the end of the period.”
He adds that on the northern and southern coasts the waves will be about 1.5 meters.
Given these forecasts, the captaincy advises the entire maritime community and the general public to exercise caution both when preparing to go to sea and when at sea or in coastal areas.
Strengthening mooring and monitoring of moored and anchored vessels, avoiding walking near the sea or open areas, avoiding recreational fishing, especially near rocks and cliff areas that are often exposed to breaking waves, are some of the recommendations left in the notice.
The IPMA has also placed the mountainous areas, south and north coasts of Madeira and Porto Santo under a yellow warning level from 12:00 to 21:00 this Thursday due to occasional heavy rainfall that may be accompanied by thunderstorms.
