Eduardo believes the Portugal national football team is a contender for the 2024 European Championship title and hopes the 2016 team he played for, which won the European Championship, will serve as an example.
“We are without a doubt candidates to fight for the title. I don’t think we’ll have any problems with this because we didn’t have [em 2016]. This holds the team and players accountable for their commitments. I hope that our experience and our achievements will serve as an example of what is possible,” says the former goalkeeper in an interview with Luza.
The former Portugal international remembers that Portugal came close to the title in the past, but it wasn’t until 2016 that he got there.
“We were the first and of course we opened the door to the future because this is a fantastic generation with players who have already won everything this year. [nos clubes]The quality is there and I hope that as a team they can achieve it because we deserve it and so do they,” he said.
Portugal is again in Group F, as in 2016, which it shares with Turkey, Georgia and the Czech Republic, but in an interview with Lusa, Eduardo says that “in such championships there are no groups available.”
“Teams have enormous value, all teams have players who play for the best teams, and the main thing to understand is that there are no easy teams, there are no easy games, because at any moment the game can determine everything else,” he said.
The former goalkeeper recalled the difficult journey of the 2016 European Championship, noting that “Portugal have that experience” as well as “the best players they have and of course they will find a balance point in their group spirit because the value is there.”
“We have everything to be successful and a little lucky, as we were [em 2016]”, He said.
Regarding the call-up of Roberto Martinez and the controversy it caused due to the exclusion of some players, Eduardo believed that it was natural and “the result of existing quality” and that now was the time for unity because it was “a list that the selector realized that chooses.”
“In my time it was the same [a controvérsia], and in the past too. I think the main thing is that there can be a discussion when the list comes out, everyone has their own idea, but from the moment [os jogadores] there is, there must be a union for the benefit of the team,” he says.
According to Eduardo, “Unfortunately, players of great talent who deserve to be there do not leave, but this has happened in the past.”
“Now those players will make us happy, even those who stayed here and will go out into the streets to celebrate the end,” he wished.
Regarding the position he has held in his career, he believes that Portugal is “more than well served.”
“We have everything: talent, experience and youth. We have Rui [Patrício] who will provide great help and, if necessary, is always ready to respond. Diogo [Costa] he has a fantastic experience, Jose [Sá] He has incredible qualities even for the championships he has competed in,” he says.
According to Eduardo, “the selector has a group.” [de guarda-redes] quality and cohesion, both on and off the pitch, to succeed: Portugal is ready and we are more than well protected in goal,” he concluded.
