Portugal has become the fifth EU country where participation in European elections has increased the most

Portugal became the fifth country in the European Union (EU) where participation rates rose the most in the European elections that ended on Sunday, up 6.7 percentage points from 2019, the European Parliament reported this Monday.

“The preliminary participation rate is around 51%, which is slightly better than five years ago, with growth seen in at least 14 EU member states,” European Parliament spokesman Jaume Duch said today, speaking to reporters in Brussels the day after end of voting. for the European elections, which took place from Thursday to Sunday, and also after election night in the half-cycle.

The official clarified that compared to 2024 and 2019, the participation rate increased by 15 percentage points in Hungary, by 12 in Slovenia, by 9.6 in Slovakia, by 7.7 in the Czech Republic, and by 6.7 in Portugal. 4.2 percentage points more in the Netherlands and 3.4 percentage points more in Germany.

Thus, according to the same data, Portugal became the fifth country with the largest increase in participation rates.

In Portugal, the European Parliament elections registered a participation rate of 37.52% nationwide, according to the institution’s data available on its website.

For comparison, this turnout was 30.75% in 2019 and 33.67% in 2014.

Also, according to the European Parliament, in the EU the level of abstention in European elections is estimated at 49%, which is slightly lower than the figure recorded in 2019.

In Portugal it should be 62.94%.

The European Parliament put EU voter turnout at 51% in the June 6-Sunday elections, down from 50.66% in the previous round of voting.

In 2019, the participation rate for European elections was 50.66%, up from 42.61% in 2014, 42.97% in 2009 and 45.47% in 2004.
