The Nordic Olympic and Paralympic Committees on Tuesday expressed their opposition to the return of Russia and Belarus to the Olympic movement and the possibility of participating in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Recently, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized the possibility of Russian and Belarusian athletes participating in international competitions under a neutral flag as long as they do not actively support the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“Now is not the right time for these considerations, since nothing has changed regarding Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine,” the Nordic committees from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland defended in a joint letter sent to several international organizations. including the IOC.
The signatories, which include the confederations of the five countries, pledge to work “in close dialogue” with “relevant” parties interested in assessing the situation, reaffirming their support for the Ukrainian people asking for peace.
Other European countries such as Poland and the Baltic states have also opposed the participation of Belarus and Russia, and the Ukrainian Olympic Committee has threatened to boycott the 2024 Games in Paris.
