CGTP warns that election results highlight the importance of intensifying the fight

On Monday, CGTP said the European election results underlined the importance of strengthening the fight for workers, given that the abstention reflects the country’s departure from EU average wages and living standards.

For the trade union federation led by Thiago Oliveira, the results of these elections indicate “the persistence of the central core from which the EU’s guiding principles emanate, in their neoliberal, federalist and militaristic logic”, with the rise of “a more reactionary and far right”. “Forces promoted by big capital and in its service.”

Considering that the election campaign for the European Parliament “was marked by an illusion around the supposed differences” of the two forces that received the most votes (PS and AD), which on “fundamental issues have overlapping positions”, and that the results led to the election of two deputies each from “the most reactionary projects led by IL and Ch”, CGTP “emphasizes the importance of intensifying the struggle in less favorable institutional frameworks to end the attack on rights and increase wages, pensions and labor rights.” who works and has worked.”

Intersindical also understands that “the transfer of sovereignty to the European Union (EU), combined with the new composition of the European Parliament resulting from these elections, poses new dangers.”

For their part, he promises, “the workers can count on actions that will reaffirm peace in the face of warmongering, as exemplified by the arms race already underway,” as well as sovereignty and national development, “with the intention of preserving, perpetuating and strengthening measures” aimed at “imposing ever greater restrictions” on the various plans that determine the future of the country.

According to the CGTP, the high percentage of abstentions recorded in this Sunday’s elections (albeit lower than in the last European elections) “cannot be separated” from the EU, which sees itself as increasingly distant from the interests and rights of workers and the population. and “a growing gap in average wages and living standards” in the country.

According to the Federation of Trade Unions, the time has come to “mobilize, explain and organize workers” for a general wage increase of 15%, a minimum wage of one thousand euros and a working time of 35 hours a week. calling for mobilization for a week of clarification, action and struggle, planned for June 20-27, targeting workers in all sectors and throughout the country.

The PS won Sunday’s European elections with 32.1% and eight MEPs, ahead of the Democratic Alliance, which had 31.1% and seven seats, according to preliminary results.

According to the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Chega, which elected two members of the European Parliament, became the third political force with 9.79%.

Also, after the election of two deputies, the Liberal Initiative (IL) received 9.07% of the votes.

The Left Bloc (BE) received 4.25% of the votes and the CDU (PCP/PEV) 4.12%, receiving one MEP each.
