Portugal guarantees Brazil that it will continue to welcome immigrants with “open arms.”

This Monday, the Portuguese government assured the Brazilian authorities that the “policy of welcoming Brazilian migrants with open arms” will continue, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation told Lusa.

“We continue our policy of welcoming this community with open arms,” Nuno Sampaio Lusa said after speaking in Brasilia today with Secretary General Itamaraty and Interim Foreign Minister Laura da Rocha.

The Secretary of State also reiterated the idea that the Brazilian community in Portugal (about 400 thousand people) is “a very important community, very well integrated and very important for the Portuguese economy.”

Among the 41 measures included in the Migration Action Plan, there is also the transformation of the current mobile visa for immigrants from the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) into a community visa (Schengen), which allows movement within the European Union. and the creation of the Foreigners and Borders Unit (UEF) under the PSP to monitor the presence of immigrants and establish emergency centers.

“The idea is to strengthen the mechanisms of good integration. I would like there to be no doubt about this. This is both a humanistic perspective and strengthening relations with the CPLP countries,” the Secretary of State told Luse, adding that the Government’s goal is “welcome, good integration, humanism.”

“This is the point of view of Portugal and this government,” he stressed.

In order for the new plan to be implemented, especially for non-CPLP migrants, “the presented migration plan provides for precisely this strengthening of consular services,” he said.

“We will now look locally and in detail at how resources can be deployed,” but “strengthening consular capacity is planned and will be implemented locally,” he said.

The Secretary of State will also participate this Monday at the Portuguese Embassy in Brasilia in the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities.
