UEFA director of refereeing Roberto Rosetti confirmed today that VAR should only intervene in 2024 European football matches when there is “evidence of a clear and obvious error”.
“Minimum intervention for maximum benefit,” Rosetti said of the competition’s video refereeing system, which will include semi-automated offsides and, for the first time, goal-line technology.
In the 2020 version, postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 18 VAR adjustments were made across the tournament’s 51 games, nine of which were for “millimeter” offsides.
“In the event of a questionable offside, we ask the assistant referees to keep the flag down and only raise it when they are safe. If they are not 100% sure, they will have to keep the flag down,” Rosetti explained.
According to the UEFA director, “with a semi-automatic offside, the offside is resolved on its own and can save a lot of time in decision making.”
VAR’s mission will be to “constantly check for clear and obvious errors” in four situations, goals, actions inside the penalty areas, red cards and incorrect player identification.
“We want referees with strong personalities to make decisions on the field,” said the UEFA director, who was pleased three days before the start of Euro 2024 with the technical innovations that will appear at the tournament and the debut of the smart ball.
The ball will have “motion sensors that will send precise data in real time, helping referees and VARs identify every single touch of the ball, reducing the time spent dealing with offsides, handballs and penalties.”
“Semi-automatic offside technology (SAOT) will also be used, thanks to 10 special cameras installed in each stadium that monitor 29 different points on each player’s body and immediately identify the point of contact of the ball,” he explained.
As for the goal line technology, there will be “seven cameras that will monitor whether the ball is inside the area” and which will indicate “whether the ball is inside the goal or not”, while the referee will receive a signal and vibration on the goal line, your watch”.
VAR will work with International Broadcasting Center Leipzigwhere four video operations rooms (VORs) have been built and where a VAR referee, two more assistants (AVARs) and three videographers will be present at each game.
In total, the Euro 2024 games, which will be held in Germany from June 14 to July 14, will be attended by 18 European teams, one of them will be led by the Portuguese Arthur Soares Dias, and the other by Argentina.
