ERC opens informal procedure based on video posted by Chega on social media

The Social Communications Regulatory Authority (ERC) has opened an informal procedure to investigate Chega’s use of manipulated information on social media using images from the SIC, an official source told Lusa on Tuesday.

This is an SIC video that Chega posted on social media, in which only part of the images of the interaction are used to suggest that the immigrant lied about his nationality and profession. In Chegi’s subtitles, the man claims to be Indonesian and a fisherman, despite telling reporters he is a Bangladeshi citizen.

Chega omits the part where Andre Ventura directly asks him if he fishes, and the man replies that he works in greenhouses and helps other Indonesian immigrants, they are fishermen.

An official ERC source contacted by Lusa on this matter “clarifies that its Regulatory Council decided on June 8 to initiate an informal procedure to investigate the use of information manipulated using images from the media on the social networks of the Chega Party.” exit of the Scientific Research Center.”

The social communications regulator “will make public the decision it makes in this case in due course,” the same source said.

On 8 June, the Union of Journalists (SJ) deplored and condemned the “attacks and slander” that journalists were subjected to in President Chegi’s statements, which he considered “deeply unfair” and demonstrating a “violation of democratic values.” “.

On Friday, Chega leader Andre Ventura accused journalists of being “enemies of the people,” using a phrase repeatedly used by former US President Donald Trump.

At the heart of the accusation were questions from journalists about a video Andre Ventura posted on social media showing part of his interaction with an immigrant who approached him last Thursday at an election rally in Póvoa de Varzim.

When questioned by journalists, Ventura refused to claim that the video was doctored and insisted that the man told him he was from Indonesia and then “then said he was from Bangladesh”, preferring to rail against the media, especially the SIC, classifying he says the work done by this TV channel is “pathetic”.
