Former Angolan Prime Minister Fransa Van Dunem dies

Former Angolan Prime Minister, deputy and former ambassador to Portugal Fernando José de França Van Dunem died this Wednesday in Portugal at the age of 89, diplomatic and parliamentary sources told Lusa.

In a note of condolence sent to Lusa, Angola’s ambassador to Portugal, Maria de Jesus Ferreira, expressed sadness over the death of Fransa Van Dunem, a victim of the disease whom she considered “a tireless and indestructible defender of the best forces.” nationalistic values ​​and the well-being of the people.”

Fransa Van Dunem, born on August 24, 1934, served as Prime Minister of Angola twice: from 1991 to 1992 and from 1996 to 1999 as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Justice.

Former MPLA MP, chaired the National Assembly (Angolan Parliament) from 1992 to 1996.

Between 1982 and 1986 he was Angola’s Ambassador to Portugal and Spain, after which he served in Belgium, the Netherlands and the European Economic Community between 1979 and 1982.

He was also Vice-President of the African Union, a member of the African Parliament and a professor of law at the Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Angola.

Expressing her condolences to the family, Maria de Jesus Ferreira stressed that Fransa Van Dunem’s legacy “will forever remain alive” in their memory and will serve as an example “for younger generations who must continue to work to make Angola an increasingly better country.”
