The Azerbaijan Football Federation announced this Wednesday the hiring of Fernando Santos, who will take on the role of selector in charge of the development of all football in this country.
The main goal of the Portuguese coach will be to involve Azerbaijan in the fight for qualification to Euro 2028, building a competitive team in the medium term. “It was decided to appoint Fernando Santos as head coach of the national team, taking into account his wealth of experience as one of the most famous specialists in world football, his successes throughout his professional career, including winning the European Championship with the Portuguese team,” can be read in the message.
Fernando Santos, who has been without a club since April when he left Besiktas, started 2024 with the Turkish club but failed to get revenge in that championship after managing Poland last year and leading the national team to Euro 2016 victory and the League of Nations in 2019.
The presentation of the 69-year-old coach is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, in Baku.
