Portugal received about 2,600 new asylum requests last year, with the main nationalities being Gambia, Afghanistan and Colombia, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said this Thursday.
“At the end of 2023, there were approximately 1,300 asylum seekers, 3,800 refugees and subsidiary protection recipients in Portugal and 59,400 temporary protection holders,” the organization said in a report on global trends for 2024.
In recent years, about 75% of new asylum applications were made on Portuguese soil and 25% at the air border, mainly at Lisbon airport.
The same source emphasized that in 2018, twenty years after the closure of the offices, UNHCR re-established its presence in Portugal.
The Regional Office for Europe in Geneva, with three staff, coordinates activities in Portugal.
UNHCR Portugal advocates and supports authorities and non-governmental agencies in providing protection. It also provides training, technical support and advice on asylum and refugee issues.
