Italy highlights ‘undeniable success’ of G7 summit with consensus among participants

The Italian Prime Minister said this Saturday that the G7 summit was an “undeniable success”, highlighting the consensus among participants on several issues such as the war in Ukraine and the conflict between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip.

Giorgia Meloni cited as an example of the success of the G7 summit, which Italy hosted from Thursday to Saturday in Puglia, the approval of “the final declaration of the meeting the day before its end,” which “does not happen very often.” often”.

Among the main topics being discussed by the world’s seven largest economies is a plan to provide Ukraine with a loan of $50 billion (about 46 billion euros) with interest paid from Russian assets frozen abroad.

“Only with peace will these assets be unfrozen,” Meloni said in a message addressed to Russia.

At the final press conference of the G7 summit, the Italian Prime Minister clarified that the European Union will not yet participate in the $50 billion loan, adding that this loan will be provided by the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and possibly Japan “in accordance with their constitutional limits.”

“At the moment, European countries are not participating in this loan because all the assets are linked to Europe, so Europe is already contributing by defining the guarantee mechanism,” he said, adding that there are still “technical details to be resolved.” .

Regarding relations with China, the Italian prime minister stressed that the G7 wanted to send a signal to Beijing that the group is “open to dialogue, but companies must be able to compete on a level playing field, in a free, rules-based market.”

On Friday, G7 leaders pledged to support Ukraine “as long as necessary” in its war against Russia and reaffirmed “collective efforts to disarm and drain funding from the Russian military-industrial complex,” according to a draft final statement consulted by AFP. news agency.

Georgia Meloni also addressed a controversial issue, namely the possible inclusion of abortion rights in the final text of the conclusions of the G7 leaders’ summit.

The “dispute” over the word “abortion” in the G7 final declaration was “constructed in a completely artificial way,” he said.

The discussion “actually did not take place either at the summit” or at the negotiations, said the head of the Italian government, who in statements to the newspaper La Repubblica said she understood the reasons for the disagreement, but stressed that: from the Italian side, the issue “was not a problem.”

The proposed final declaration of the G7 summit in Italy, announced on Friday, condemns violations of the rights of women and LGBTQ+ people (an acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and other sexual orientations). gender identity), but the inclusion of abortion rights has led to differences.

Early drafts contained an explicit hint that was eventually omitted, apparently due to doubts from a Meloni executive.
