At least two prison guards were taken hostage by Daesh members in a pre-trial detention center in the Rostov region in southern Russia, according to information released by prison authorities.
The Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia reported the beginning of the unrest, adding that the incident was taking place in pre-trial detention center No. 1 in the city of Rostov-on-Don, the capital of the region.
“The responsible person of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia is at the scene of the incident, as well as representatives of law enforcement agencies and the prosecutor’s office,” says a message published on the FSIN website, which states that negotiations are underway to release the hostages.
“Prisoners who were in one of the cells of pre-trial detention center No. 1 […] “Two prison guards were taken hostage in the Rostov region,” he said.
The same information states that the facility is “operating normally” and that “the situation is under control,” without providing any further details.
Russia has been the target of several attacks for which the jihadist organization has claimed responsibility.
On March 22, gunmen opened fire at a concert hall near Moscow, killing at least 144 people and wounding hundreds. It was the deadliest attack on Russian soil since 2004.
