Twenty kilograms of fish and three fishing gear were seized early this Sunday during a police poaching operation in the international section of the Minho River in the municipality of Montsan, the National Maritime Administration (ANM) said.
During the operation carried out by the local command of the maritime police of Caminha, a pleasure boat under the Spanish flag was discovered with two crew members on board, a Spaniard and a Portuguese, which was actively using three professional fishing gear: called “tremalhos”, the AMN specified in a statement.
As a precautionary measure, three fishing gear were confiscated because, according to the AMN, they constituted a “violation of the International Fisheries Agreement between Portugal and Spain,” which applies “exclusively” to the international section of the Minho River.
Also seized were 20 kilograms of fish that were on board the pleasure boat, which were later handed over to a social solidarity institution, the same news release said.
ANM added that Caminha’s maritime police prepared a report, “subsequently sent to the Naval Commando del Miño”, a Spanish body similar to the territory, on the use of unauthorized fishing gear on recreational vessels fishing in the AMN area. crossing an unauthorized international vessel on the Minho River, as well as operating a pleasure craft without the appropriate rank of pleasure navigator and lack of navigation lights for night navigation.
