Swimmer Regina Veloso, who became the first Portuguese woman to compete in the sport at the Olympic Games when she competed in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, has died at the age of 85, the Portuguese Swimming Federation announced this Monday.
According to the federal note, Regina Veloso was from Mozambique, the country in which she was born on March 27, 1939, and was one of the most outstanding swimmers of her time.
In Rome 1960 he was seventh in his qualifying series in the 200m breaststroke in 3.13.3 minutes.
In addition, Veloso competed for Grupo Desportivo de Lourenço Marques, was a national champion and holder of several national records.
“The leadership of the Portuguese Swimming Federation expresses its deepest condolences to his family and friends,” the federation said in a statement.
The Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) also announced the death, expressing condolences to the family, the federation and the Association of Portuguese Olympic Athletes.
