Nurses at health centers in the Lisbon region are on strike on July 4th.

The Portuguese Nurses’ Union (SEP) called for a strike on July 4, targeting nurses from the local health centers of Amadora/Sintra, Tagus Estuary, Loures Odivelas, Santa Maria, San José and West Lisbon.

Nurses are demanding better salaries and career opportunities.

According to a preliminary notice published in the press this Wednesday, the strike, dubbed SEP, runs from 08:00 to 24:00, covers the morning and afternoon shifts, but includes the provision of the minimum services necessary to meet the needs of “impenetrable social needs.”

Among the goals of the strike are “fair and legal accounting of points withheld for progress purposes, namely those relating to the 2019-2020 and 2021-2022 biennia, accounting for 1.5 points between 2004 and 2014, as well as updated payments and retroactive contributions.” , since 2018 due to a change in career position.

It also requires the introduction of a so-called “career accelerator”, the transition to the category of nurse specialists of all nurses who have not transferred “by virtue of the legal exercise of their parental rights”, the effective placement of all those in precarious relationships and the hiring of more nurses depending on needs.

The announcement of the strike came a day before a planned meeting with the health minister to begin negotiations over pay scale changes and career issues.

The nurses went on strike on May 10, but at the national level, in a strike also called by the AKP, to demand the start of a negotiation process with a memorandum of understanding on the issues to be discussed (scoring, nursing careers). and other aspects) and the corresponding calendar.

The May strike, which also involved a meeting in Campo Pequeno in Lisbon, was 76.8% strong, according to the AKP, with the effects most visible in operating rooms and in external consultations in hospitals.
