Saudi Arabian state television reported temperatures rose to 51.8 degrees Celsius (125.2 Fahrenheit) on Monday in the shadow of Mecca’s Grand Mosque.
A 2024 Journal of Travel and Medicine study concluded that rising global temperatures may be outpacing heat management strategies. A 2019 study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters said that as temperatures in arid Saudi Arabia rise due to climate change, Hajj pilgrims will face “extreme danger.”
Over the past 30 years, hundreds of deaths during pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia have been caused by riots, tent fires and other accidents. The pilgrimage began this Friday.
According to Reuters, the hajj is an annual pilgrimage that millions of Muslims make to Mecca to perform the religious rituals that the Prophet Muhammad taught to his followers 14 centuries ago.
