Portugal’s goal in the 92nd minute on Tuesday was celebrated by all the Portuguese, especially those present at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, where the match was played.
But there was a special fan who celebrated Francisco Conceicao’s goal. Sergio Conceição, the former Porto coach and father of the national hero, watched the match with the Czech Republic in the stands.
The goal not only gave Portugal victory, but also allowed father and son to unite again through limited-overs football. If in 2000 Sergio Conceicao scored three goals at that European Championship – all in one match against Germany, then Francisco Conceicao scored a goal 24 years later in the great competition of the “old continent”.
Now, this makes father and son only the second pair of parents and offspring to make their mark in Europe. Members of the Italian family Enrico and Federico Chiesa were the first to achieve this feat than the Portuguese, in both cases, four years earlier.
The father scored in 1996 and the son in 2020 – in a competition that the Italian team subsequently won.
