Scotland’s recent defeat to Hungary outraged thousands of Scots in attendance at Stuttgart Stadium for Euro 2024 in Germany. Among them, the voice of Commander Steve Clark, the trainer of the vanquished, sounded loudest, pointing his finger at one name: Facundo Tello.
“I don’t understand why he is refereeing a game here and not in his own country,” the coach said of the Argentine referee. The move that sparked this reaction was the fall of Stuart Armstrong in a dispute over the ball with defender Willi Orbán in the Hungarian zone.
“[Esse lance] It’s game time. This is a 100% penalty. Someone needs to explain to me why this wasn’t flagged, otherwise I think there’s something wrong,” he complained.
The move came minutes before Hungary scored the winning goal late in the day. VAR reviewed the move but did not consider it a foul, so Tello did not have to be called in to review the images.
Asked if he had spoken to the referee, the Scotland coach replied: “For what? He is Argentinean. What’s the point? Why is he not a European judge?
In the event of a draw, Scotland would have expected a miracle of progressing to the next stage by finishing in one of the top four third places. Thus, they were eliminated from the group stage again.
Steve Clarke admitted it was a “difficult” night for the Scots, with the game also marked by a moment of scare when Barnabas Vargas collapsed on the pitch.
