Hungarian footballer Barnabas Varga, who was hospitalized on Sunday night with several facial fractures after a violent clash with Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn at Euro 2024, underwent successful surgery this Monday, the Hungarian federation said.
“Barnabas Varga underwent successful surgery on Monday afternoon. According to doctors specializing in facial injuries, the procedure was simple and the player can leave the hospital on Wednesday,” the federation said via social media.
The incident occurred in the match between Hungary and Scotland (1:0), in the third and final round of Group A of Euro 2024, in which Varga was hit by the elbow of the Scottish goalkeeper and fell helplessly on the back of his head, losing consciousness.
During first aid on the field, the player was isolated and his teammates held a protective blanket while the striker was treated and was already conscious before being sent to hospital.
Hungary eventually beat Scotland 1-0, with a 90+10 minute goal from former Benfica player Kevin Czobot adding three more points to the overall tally.
