Portugal sends troops to fight forest fires in Chile

Portugal will send a team of 141 experts to Chile as part of a European Union (EU) contingent deployed to help fight forest fires in response to a request from the Chilean government for help.

According to a statement by the European Commission, the Portuguese contingent includes firefighters, forest fire coordination specialists and medical personnel.

In addition to Portugal, Spain and France are also providing assistance: Madrid is providing two land-based forest fire fighting teams with a total of 28 people, and a forest fire assessment and advisory team consisting of ten experts. France sent a team of 80 firefighters.

In total, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism will deploy 260 firefighters, coordinators and medical personnel to areas of Chile most affected by wildfires, including a liaison officer from the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre.

An EU civil protection team is expected to be dispatched in the coming days.

Chile has sent a request to the EU for help in extinguishing numerous forest fires in the center and in the south of the country, caused by high temperatures.
