Milivoje Novakovic is the assistant coach of the Slovenian national team. And it was he who unwittingly cost Slovenia 2nd place in Group C after receiving a yellow card in the 1st round. Let’s explain.
After three games, Denmark and Slovenia are level on points (3), in direct opposition between them (1-1) and on overall goal difference (2 goals scored and 2 conceded for each team). And, according to the first information provided by UEFA on Tuesday evening, as well as according to the match reports, which are still on the official website, yellow cards (6).
To break the tie, one final criterion would have to be used: the rankings from the qualifying round (where Denmark and Slovenia also had the same 22 points, giving the Danes the advantage in the head-to-head). But on Tuesday, an official UEFA source confirmed to Reuters that Novakovic had been booked in the match against Denmark on the 16th of this month, giving Slovenia seven yellow cards to their opponents’ six.
