The Lisbon Court of Appeal acquitted former Judicial Police Inspector Setúbal João de Souza and lawyer Tania Reis from the sentences of six months of suspended imprisonment and one year of actual imprisonment to which they were respectively sentenced in the court of Vila Franca de Xira, November 9, 2023 of the year. The prosecution’s indictment came after two of the defendants called the media to the home where Rosa Grilo killed her husband, Louis Grilo, following the discovery of exploding ammunition lodged in the home’s bathtub and another on a bedroom dresser.
A group of judges, which includes Carlos Alexandre, found that the crime of personal favoritism, of which both are accused by the prosecutor’s office, has not been proven. In response to the defendants’ appeals, in a ruling to which the CM had access, the judges understood that no evidence had been presented to show that the two defendants actually planted firearms ammunition in the house where Rosa Grilo killed her husband Luis Grilo, “with the intent to prolong the murder trial in which this accused was tried and convicted, with the intention of thereby expiring the period of preventive detention which she was serving during her trial at first instance.”
