The European Union (EU) pledged this Thursday to provide “predictable and long-term support” for the security and defense of Ukraine, according to a joint statement issued this Thursday in Brussels.
The commitment, signed by European Council Presidents Charles Michel and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who traveled to Brussels to sign the document on the sidelines of a meeting that brings together European leaders this Thursday, stipulates that the EU is committed to providing “predictable, long-term and sustainable support for security and defense of Ukraine”.
The EU will continue, through the establishment of an Assistance Fund, to support the supply of lethal and non-lethal military equipment and training to Kyiv with a budget of five billion euros (ME) for 2024, with the possibility of an “annual increase” comparable to 2027, based on Ukraine’s needs and subject to the political guidance of the EU Council.
The total amount of assistance to Ukraine from the EU and member states amounts to almost 108 billion euros, including 39 million euros for military support, of which 6.1 billion euros through the European Peace Mechanism.
The EU also created a Ukraine Mechanism of 50,000 ME to provide projected financial support to Ukraine over the period 2024-2027 (7.9 thousand ME has already been disbursed) and agreed to use emergency revenues from Russia’s fixed assets to support Kyiv.
Ukraine is committed to continuing the reforms necessary for future EU membership, as well as in the areas of security, intelligence and defence.
