The Portuguese football team, playing in Germany for Euro 2024, paid tribute to Manuel Fernandes, who died on Thursday aged 73, with a minute’s silence before training on Friday.
The entire entourage of the Quinas formation, including Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Fernando Gomes and ‘vice-president’ Humberto Coelho, gathered in a circle on the lawn of the team’s ‘headquarters’ in Marienfeld to observe a minute of silence.
The tribute to the former player and coach, who was capped 30 times for Portugal and scored seven goals, ended with a round of applause from everyone present.
Former footballer and coach Manuel Fernandez died on Thursday at the age of 73 after a long illness.
Manuel Fernandez, born on June 5, 1951 in Sarillos Pequenos, Moita, achieved fame as a player, most notably with Sporting between 1975/76 and 1986/87, and also playing for Sarilense, CUF and ” Vitoria de Setubal.”
After finishing his playing career, Manuel Fernandes remained involved with football as a coach, managing Vitoria de Setúbal, Estrela da Amadora, Ovarense, Sporting, Campomaiorense, Tirsense, Santa Clara, Penafiel and União de Leiria, and in between coaching in Angola, at ASA.
