Tropical Storm Beryl, the first hurricane in the Atlantic basin, has strengthened as it approaches the Barlavento archipelago, islands in the southeastern Lesser Antilles, where it is expected to arrive Monday with dangerous winds, North American weather services said.
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Beryl is a Category 3 out of 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (115 miles per hour), but is expected to reach the Windward Islands as a Category 4.
The Miami, Florida-based NHC issued a hurricane warning for most of the Windward Islands and a tropical storm threat for Martinique and Dominica in its latest bulletin.
