Early forecasts show the far-right National Union (RN) party, led by Marine Le Pen and her allies, leading the first round of France’s legislative elections with more than 34% of the vote.
The far right is currently ahead of the left-wing Nova Frente Popular alliance, which exit polls predict will have between 28.5% and 29.1%. President Emmanuel Macron’s party is even further behind (20.5% to 21.5%).
“The Macron bloc” is “virtually erased,” said Marine Le Pen, in her first reaction to the forecasts.
Macron calls for unity against far right
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a “clearly democratic and republican broad alliance” against the far right in the second round of the legislative assembly, given the latter’s wide victory that early forecasts had indicated.
