Driver who hit nine pedestrians in Seoul under investigation for manslaughter

The driver of a car who killed nine people when he struck a group of pedestrians waiting at an intersection in South Korea’s capital will be charged with manslaughter, Seoul police said.

A car hit several people in central Seoul on Monday evening after it allegedly drove in the wrong direction and collided with two other vehicles.

Six more people were injured, including the driver, who was detained.

According to South Korean media, the driver told authorities that the car “suddenly and unintentionally accelerated.”

Seoul Police Department Senior Officer Jeong Yeon-woo told local reporters that the car that caused the accident would be inspected by a specialized team.

Authorities are also considering seeking a formal arrest warrant to hold the driver in custody, Jung said.

Police said Tuesday that tests showed the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The suspect was hospitalized, but authorities refused to release the identity of the detained driver.

South Korean media reported that he was a bus driver “in his 60s” who lived in Ansan, a city south of Seoul, and had 40 years of driving experience.
