The son of the President of the Republic, Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, has already begun to testify before the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins who were treated in 2020 at the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon.
Nuno Rebelo de Sousa is present via videoconference. In a letter sent to the chairman of the parliamentary inquiry committee, the deputies assured that they would not answer questions during the CPI, exercising their “right to silence”.
The PSD wanted to summon the current partner of the son of the President of the Republic to the commission investigating the Portuguese-Brazilian twins. “There is an email, a copy of which contains an email address, which has raised our doubts,” explained António Rodrigues of the PSD. The party therefore wants to hear the opinion of “the person who currently lives with Dr. Nuno Rebelo de Sousa.”
The commission of inquiry approved the questioning of the current partner of the son of the President of the Republic, as well as the questioning of the former Minister of Foreign Affairs Augusto Santos Silva and the then Minister of Justice Francisca Van Dunem. No party voted against holding the hearings.
Last week, the Liberal Initiative (IL) parliamentary group demanded a hearing of former Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva.
At the request of IL, Chega leader André Ventura asked to add the name of former Justice Minister Francisca Van Dunem, who headed the Justice Ministry at the time of the events.
Hearn during a video conference, Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, the son of the President of the Republic, assured that he would remain silent.
“Thus, any admissible and legitimate questions within the framework of this Commission, given its subject matter, can naturally only concern the same object as the criminal proceedings”: “I will exercise my right to silence,” said Nuno Rebelo de Sousa.
Deputy Joana Cordeiro of the Liberal Initiative complained that the son of the President of the Republic was silent, saying that he was “hiding, hiding from the law” and accused him of cowardice.
Nuno Rebelo de Sousa continued without providing any clarification.
“For the reasons stated, I do not answer,” said the son of the president of the republic.
João Almeida from CDS-PP asked Nuno Rebelo de Sousa to introduce himself. And asked for clarification regarding his professional activities.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s son introduced himself and explained that he has no other professional activity than as director of EDP Brasil, the company where he has worked since 2011.
João Almeida asked if Nuno Rebelo de Sousa had any relationship with Daniela Martins or António Lacerda Sales, which prevented him from answering. The defendant chose not to answer.
The SDS-PP deputy asked to record in the minutes that the defendant refused to answer on this topic and that he “did not comply with the duty of any witness.”
António Rodrigues of the PSD considers the situation to be “almost comedy”.
The SDP spokesman recalled that the number of listenings has already exceeded 50, and this is because they are trying to “get the gist of the whole story.”
“The commission is not here to condemn, but to investigate the facts,” the SDP deputy said.
PS’s João Paulo Correia said Nuno Rebelo de Sousa would “gain a lot” if he provided clarification.
“This silence does not bring clarity. It deepens the doubts and contradictions that have been introduced into this process, the main protagonist of which is Mr. Nuno Rebelo de Sousa,” the MP said.
João Paulo Correia accused Nuno Rebelo de Sousa of being a “business broker and lobbyist”.
Andre Ventura from Chega said Nuno Rebelo de Sousa “has created a huge problem in the image of Portugal, the President of the Republic and the government.”
“What we have is a diabolical network of Portuguese sovereign bodies,” says André Ventura.
In the second round of questions, only Chega wanted to question Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, who, as in the first round, did not answer.
