Police authorities have arrested a man suspected of raping a woman at knifepoint in October 2023 in the municipality of Faro, the Judicial Police (PJ) announced this Thursday.
The suspect, 27, was arrested by officers from the SP’s Southern Directorate on Wednesday when he returned to Portugal after an absence abroad, the criminal police agency said in a statement.
The detainee has “strong evidence of a crime of rape that occurred in the municipality of Faro in the early morning of October 20, 2023, the day the victim herself filed a complaint with the authorities.
“During the investigation it was established that the victim, a 19-year-old woman, was approached by an unknown person as she was leaving the place where a popular fair was taking place,” PJ explained.
The victim was approached on the street and the young woman was “forced to perform sexual acts under threat of using a bladed weapon.”
According to police, “the sexual assault took place on a public street, in a secluded location, and the victim had no opportunity to seek help from passersby.”
The detainee will attend a first judicial interrogation, which will determine the possible coercive measures that will be applied, the SP also said, noting that the investigation is being led by the Department of Investigation and Criminal Affairs (DIAP) of Faro.
