Sports journalist Rui Tovar died this Thursday at the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon after going to the hospital’s emergency room due to heart problems.
The funeral will take place this Friday at 3:30 pm in the small chapel of the Church of São João de Deus (on Praça de Londres). The pre-burial mass will begin on Saturday at 12 noon and the body will leave at 2 pm for the cemetery of Alto de São João.
Rui Tovar was hospitalized in Santa Maria at around 5:00 pm this Thursday and died at 7:45 pm. Early in the evening, Maria João Lourenço Tovar, Rui Tovar’s wife, confirmed to Correio da Manhã the news of the journalist’s death.
In a state of shock, Maria João Lourenço Tovar, the journalist’s wife, explained to CM that Rui Tovar had recently undergone a “catheterization (an invasive test to evaluate the blood vessels and the inside of the heart) and that he left the hospital healthy, but now [ontem]Something went wrong.” A shocked Maria Joao simply explained: “He had a heart attack… But now I can’t talk. I’m waiting for my son [Rui Miguel Tovar, jornalista do ‘i’ que está a acompanhar o Mundial]who comes from Brazil,” he concluded.
Rui Tovar has been using a pacemaker with a defibrillator since 2011. In a 2013 interview with CM, the journalist said that his heart problems began in 2003. In addition, it was in that year that he had his first catheterization. In 2007, he had another one, and in January 2011, doctors decided to install a pacemaker with a defibrillator. Since then, Rui Tovar has tried to lead a healthy lifestyle and watch his diet, even saying that he avoids driving.
Rui Tovar was considered a master of sports journalism and football criticism. He was currently a columnist for CM, where he wrote a weekly column called “History” in the CM’s Saturday supplement “Correio Sport”. He was also a commentator for CMTV and RTP. Just yesterday, at 4pm, Rui Tovar had arranged to send his weekly chronicle. But Rui Tovar, one of the “victims” of Saramago’s censorship, whose testimony is contained in the work of the researcher Pedro Marques Gomes “Os Saneamentos Politicos do ‘Diário de Notícias”, was interested in more than just football. At the time, Tovar told CM: “He was a great writer, but not a great man”. In a career that spanned four decades, Tovar remains linked to RTP, which he joined in the 70s.
