Portuguese tennis player Francisco Cabral and Colombian Nicolas Barrientos were eliminated today in the second round of the Wimbledon doubles, the third Grand Slam tournament of the season, after being defeated by Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Rafael Matos.
In a match that started on Friday but was interrupted by rain, Cabral (ranked 66th in the world doubles rankings) and Barrientos (ranked 52nd) were defeated by Matos (ranked 40th) and Melo (41st) 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-5) and 7-6 (10-3), in two hours and 44 minutes.
In a match without a break of serve (there were only five “break points”), Cabral was unable to reach the 1/8 finals of a major again, something he has achieved only once, at Roland Garros, in 2023, together with Rafael Matos.
Cabral’s defeat leaves Wimbledon without a Portuguese representative, coming shortly after Nuno Borges, who had already been eliminated in singles, lost in the first round of the doubles alongside France’s Arthur Rinderknek.
