Uruguay qualified for the semi-finals of the Copa America on Saturday by beating Brazil on penalties 4-2 after a very close 90 minutes in Paradise, Nevada.
Apart from the 35th minute, in which former Benfica player Darwin Nunez first and former Vitoria de Guimarães and Sporting Rafinha later had two excellent scoring opportunities, the game was a desert of scoring opportunities.
In a very balanced match, in which neither team was clearly in the lead, Brazil could not even take advantage of the numerical advantage they had had since the 74th minute, when Uruguayan Nandez saw the red arrow.
As seemed inevitable, the game went to penalties and then Uruguay became more competent as only Jimenez lost (save by Alisson) and then match point at 3-1, while for Brazil, former Porto player Eder Militão missed the first, was stopped by Roche and Douglas Luiz the third, at the right post.
The final score was 4-2, recorded by former “lion” Ugarte, who thus put Uruguay on the road to Colombia, in the semi-final, which is expected to take place on Wednesday.
The game started off tensely, with both teams looking to give everything in every move, aggressively, which meant the first dangerous move didn’t come until the 18th minute, when Darwin headed towards a ‘accidental’ shot from Militau.
Ten minutes later Brazil responded: Endrick, replacing the suspended Vinicius Junior, received a pass from an opponent but made a bad decision, and at 33, Uruguay lost Ronald Araujo to injury, replaced by Jimenez.
The biggest emotions of the first half came in the 35th minute: Darwin received a great pass from Nandez on the right and headed the ball very poorly, and Rafinha immediately found himself isolated from Roche, who made a great save with his left hand.
In the final part of the first half, the highlight was a new acceleration by Rafinha, who beat the “heavenly” defense and was again thwarted by the Uruguayan goalkeeper.
The second half became even more closed, more controversial, with more fouls: Uruguay was the only team to shoot at the opposite goal: Valderde in the 48th and 63rd minutes, and Darwin in the 53rd minute won in the penalty area but hit Marquinhos.
The game changed in the 74th minute when Nandez committed a bad foul on Rodrygo and was sent off after the referee checked the images alerted by VAR.
The Canarinha team began to “control” the game, having more possession of the ball, but without achieving more than a “timid” shot by Hendrick, which Roche made without problems, in the 84th minute, three before the shot of the Porto player Evanilson.
Uruguay prevailed in the penalties, to the despair of Vinicius Junior in the stands, who was probably wondering why he had been ‘excluded’ from the game for a pointless yellow card in the previous match against Colombia.
