According to a study presented this Sunday by the Facial Expression of Emotions Laboratory (FEELab) in Porto, facial expressions of anger were most pronounced during the 48 games already played at Euro 2024.
As similar research conducted by FEELab showed, expressions of anger were again most frequent (7/10) during European Championship matches, with only the semi-finals and final remaining to be played.
Anger was also the most prominent emotion at the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Championships, as well as the 2012, 2016 and 2020 European Championships.
After that, at Euro 2024, the most common facial expressions were joy and sadness, but the picture ranged from pain, surprise, contempt, disgust and fear, according to image analysis using automatic recognition technology and in real time.
The aim of the study, “Neuropsychophysiology of facial expressions of emotion: a sample of UEFA Euro 2024 players”, was to examine the frequency and intensity of facial expressions in players from different countries and ethnic groups in the context of competition.
The record of Portugal, which was eliminated on Saturday in the quarter-finals by France on penalties (after a 0-0 draw after extra time), does not deviate from the standard of its opponents.
