A bomb threat forced the evacuation of the Russian embassy in Brasilia on the morning of Monday, July 8, and triggered a police seizure and mass movement in the region where diplomatic missions are located in Brazil’s federal capital.
However, by 13:00 local time (17:00 Lisbon time), no suspicious objects had been found either in the embassy building or in the access tunnel where the suspected bomb was reported to have been left.
The warning of an impending explosion at the diplomatic mission was made by an unknown person via a telephone call in Russian. The mission staff reported the threat to the authorities, and a large number of military police (public security), firefighters and civil police (judicial system) were sent to the place, which was surrounded, devastated and isolated.
After more than two hours of clearing by agents of the anti-explosive squad, police ruled out the presence of any explosive devices inside the diplomatic building or on the approaches to it.
The Russian embassy in Brasilia has already been the subject of other threats of attack, one of which occurred on July 14, 2022, when the post office delivered a package and shortly after an anonymous phone call warned that the box received contained an explosive device.
The police then took the suspicious package to a safe place and detonated it. It was not reported at the time whether the box contained a bomb or not, but police sources said it contained “unhealthy products,” without specifying what kind.
