Amnesty International (AI) on Monday called on Portugal to review its legislation on demonstrations and promote greater police accountability, noting that since 2016 the General Inspectorate has published only one case of disciplinary action against officers in this context.
The case cited by Amnesty was published on the website of the Inspectorate General of Internal Management and concerned the searches of Climáximo activists in 2021, a source in the human rights organization told Lusa.
Portugal is among the countries analysed by Amnesty in a European report where there were instances of force “akin to torture or other ill-treatment”, namely police beating or kicking protesters who were already on the ground and/or offering no resistance.
