If they repeat the same type of protests during this period, they risk serving an effective sentence.
Reading out the sentence at the Lisbon Local Court of Misdemeanours, Judge Afonso Nunes considered that “if the defendants have the right to demonstrate, they also have the right to move freely. (…) The right to move must prevail over the right to demonstrate, since it infringes on other rights, such as the right to work.”
The judge said such actions “must be punished more severely by the courts to stop them.”
He reminded that disrespect for the law is not the best way to fight.
“There are other ways, this one is completely unacceptable. I don’t understand why they do this.”
One of the convicted, Maria Mesquita, said as she left court: “The lives of the people I love outweigh the threat of prison in every way. We will continue to hold on with all our might, doing everything we can to save everything we love.” The defense will appeal the verdict.
