Judokas Miguel Vieira (J1 -60kg) and Djibrilo Iafa (J1 -73kg) confirmed their qualification for the Paralympic Games on Tuesday, increasing Portugal’s representation at Paris 2024 to a record nine disciplines.
Both athletes qualified based on the world rankings published by the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA): Miguel Vieira, the European and World Champion, was third and Djibrilo Iafa was sixth in his class.
With these two additional confirmations, Portugal’s mission at the Paralympic Games from 28 August to 8 September has increased to 26 athletes in nine uniforms, a new record after eight at Tokyo 2020.
Currently, the most represented sport is bocce, with seven elements, followed by athletics (six) and swimming (four).
Next come canoeing, cycling and judo, with just two elements each, while badminton, shooting and triathlon have one element each.
Portugal, which was represented by 33 athletes at Tokyo 2020, will make its 12th appearance at Paris 2024, where it has won a total of 94 medals (25 gold, 30 silver and 39 bronze).
