The sale at auction of a luxury mansion located in Quinta da Marinha, Cascais, where three million euros and three million dollars (about 2.7 million euros) in banknotes were found in 2016, brought the state 11.2 million euros. The property will belong to a Congolese minister.
According to Jornal de Negócios, it is a three-story villa with 7 bedrooms, a swimming pool, a games room, a cinema room with 11 seats, several bathrooms, one of which has a sauna and a Turkish bath, a gym and many other amenities.
The auction, which was placed on the market on June 5 with a base price of around 9.8 million euros and a minimum of 8.3 million euros, ended this Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. on the e-auction platform. Shortly before the deadline, the last offer did not reach the set minimum, but a sharp jump led to a final price of 11,177,463.49 euros, adds Negocios.
The auction was organised by the Portuguese judiciary, which confiscated the luxury mansion in 2016 as part of Operation Rota do Atlântico, which led to the arrest of businessmen José Veiga and Paulo Santana Lopes, the brother of the former prime minister. Also at stake are suspicions of corruption in international trade, influence peddling, economic participation in business, criminal associations, tax fraud and money laundering in business involving Portugal, Brazil and the Republic of Congo.
