Beste to strengthen Benfica’s left flank

Jan-Niklas Beste will strengthen Benfica, thus completing the signing of a left-back with a clearly attacking character, as Roger Schmidt wanted.

The Reds will have to pay around €8 million to Heidenheim, the German club with which he had one year left on his contract, for the 25-year-old German international to join. The player is already in Lisbon and could be announced as a reinforcement by Benfica at any time.

According to CMBeste’s versatility was a determining factor in his selection. The Dortmund-trained player plays on the left flank and has played as a defender, midfielder and striker throughout his career.

However, he is most often used at the back, where his good ability to hold up the ball is used. He has good technique, takes free kicks well and his figures for the last season in the German league are interesting: 32 games, eight goals and 13 assists for Heidenheim, the team that finished 8th in the qualification for the conference league. The previous season, in 36 games, he scored 12 goals and made 13 assists.

ABOUT CM It also emerged that Benfica had been circling Beste for some time. The interest was heightened after Gosens’ hypothesis was disproved. But also because business opportunities opened up.

The German defender has a market value of 15 million euros, but the fact that he is entering the final year of his contract with Heidenheim without having renewed it has deprived the German club of the opportunity to negotiate.

Other clubs were fighting for Beste, and there are even reports that a Qatari club wanted to buy him for 15 million euros, but the player himself denies this possibility. This is because at this stage of his career he wants to stay in Europe.

FLIGHT OPENS A NEW VACANCY

Japanese goalkeeper Leo Kokubo (23) left Benfica after six seasons at Luz to join Sint-Truiden in the Belgian league. “Arigato for everything,” he wrote on social media. Benfica looks set to move towards hiring an alternative to Trubin (a regular starter) and Samuel Soares.

GAME WITH FARENZA

This Friday, Benfica will play their first match of the new season against Farense. The game will be held in Agueda and will kick off at 20:00. It will ultimately be the first opportunity to see two reinforcements in action: striker Pavlidis and midfielder Leandro Barreira.
