The Health Ministry has appointed Sergio Dias Janeiro as president of the National Institute of Emergency Medicine after the previous appointee, Vitor Almeida, backed out of his decision to accept the position, the ministry announced Friday.
A statement from the Ministry of Health explained that “in contacts with the authorities last week,” anesthesiologist Vitor Almeida “came to the conclusion that the conditions for assuming the position of President of INEM were not met for professional reasons and given the current context of the Institute.”
Vitor Almeida was appointed president of INEM on July 4 after Luis Meira resigned from the post over a dispute over the tender for emergency medical helicopters.
In a note published today, the Ministry of Health said that, given the resignation of Vitor Almeida, it had decided to appoint doctor Sergio Agostinho Dias Janeiro on a 60-day basis due to a vacancy in the position.
Sérgio Dias Janeiro is a physician specializing in Internal Medicine and currently Director of the Internal Medicine Service at the Hospital das Forças Armadas, where he served as Clinical Director of the Emergency Services from 2022 to 2023.
He graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the New University of Lisbon, with additional military training for the Army Medicine Course at the Military Academy from 1999 to 2006.
According to the information published, Sérgio Dias Janeiro has completed the Military Parachuting, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Medical Response to Major Incidents (MRMI) courses, as well as INEM-certified courses in ambulances and resuscitation for doctors. Physician-regulator of the Emergency Care Center and the Flight Physiology and Heliport Safety Course.
Sergio Dias Janeiro has also served as the Advanced Life Support (ALS) Course Director and an instructor for the European Trauma Course (ETC) and Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), and served as a NATO Operations Commissioner in Kabul, Afghanistan, in the Medical Advisory and Liaison Team.
He has been a member of the Medical Association since 2006 and the Faculty of Internal Medicine since 2014.
According to the Ministry of Health, a competition with CReSAP will now be opened.
